Making Bulawayo green: ZDDT in tree planting excercise

BULAWAYO – Representatives of the 29 Wards of Bulawayo recently gathered at a disused park in Nketa 7, in the South Western Townships.

The group, comprising of Councillors and Community Action Teams, with technical assistance provided by Huntsman Indigenous Trees, Turk Mine, enthusiastically set about digging, planting and watering trees.

The demonstration launched the implementation of the Bulawayo Urban Greening campaign, supported by ZDDT and funded by GTZ and the German Development Ministry.

Proceedings kicked off with the usual devotions, introductions, welcoming address and background discourse, followed by turning of the first sod by Deputy Mayor, Cllr. A. Mpofu, and Ward 1.

Over 50 people assembled for the occasion, once again proving the characteristic trade mark of commitment and cooperation for which local authority leadership in the City has become renowned.

Team ZDDT also provided media exposure for the occasion and agronomists Brian Williams, his wife Lene and two assistants, illustrated plant care procedure, pronouncing the real value of trees for subsequent generations.
