Rotary Club, Canada, Pledges to Support Nkulumane Clinic
Mr Conway, who was travelling with his wife and personal assistant, Mrs Jen Conway, received a warm welcome at the clinic from the Director in the Health Department of Bulawayo City Council, Mrs Zanele Hwalima, who presented the health centre’s wish list to the Canadian delegates.

“As with most institutions in the country, we are faced with a number of challenges. For instance we need to get a new small laundry machine to wash our linen because all the 29 clinics are dependant on the laundry machine at Thorngrove Clinics and that causes congestion. We also need scales, medicines and chemicals for sterilising our equipment and cleaning the clinic to keep it safe for our patients,” said Mrs Hwalima before taking the visitors on a tour of the clinic.
The visit was facilitated by Zimbabwe Development Democracy Trust (ZDDT), which worked hand in glove with a Harare based Rotarian, Mr Rodney Beadon. It is in line with the Trust’s Local Authority (LA) Capacity Building Programme, which seeks to assist the LA’s to improve Service Delivery.
Mr Conway said his District is making regular shipments to different parts of the world that need such assistance and would therefore be more than pleased to aid the local clinic if the opportunity arose and resources permitted.
“We have been assisting rural clinics in Manicaland and we have therefore engaged the Ministry of Health to allow us duty free importation of our containers because we cover the shipment costs with donations. Rotary in Canada sends out at least one container every week to different parts of the world, so you should come up with a wish list where you write down all your requests and we will get you into the queue of shipments. That process might take up to 6 months plus another two months or so for the container to get here.”
The clinic has in the past received assistance in the form of solar lighting equipment for its maternity ward from a joint venture between Alternative Energy Consultants, Borrowdale Brooke division of Rotary Club, Rotary E-Club of London Centenary and ZDDT.
