Trinity Tomato: A Game Changer
- Written by: Sam Coventry
The Hlanganani community market garden has kicked off the first harvest of their vertically grown Israeli hybrid Trinity tomato crop, marking a significant milestone for local agriculture.
The community is optimistic about the future yield as ninety-four per cent achieved an A-grade, and only 6% of the first harvest has been classified as B-grade due to slight deformities in shape.
The crop, which is expected to be harvested for up to six months, promises a substantial return, particularly in terms of yield per square metre. Project beneficiaries anticipate a bumper crop, which could provide a steady income for the garden community over the coming six months.
This new venture into vertical hybrid tomato farming is seen as a game-changer for the community garden, which has been looking for ways to boost its agricultural output due to limited arable land and the general small size of the garden.
