A recent visit by philanthropist, social investor and co-founder of Sally Foundation Mike Roche and the Zimbabwe Development and Democracy Trust (ZDDT) team to the Uncommon Innovation Hub in Emganwini has sparked exciting discussions about introducing a youth-focused innovation hub at Sizinda’s Green Gardens in western Bulawayo.
The initiative seeks to combine technology, innovation, and agriculture to encourage young people to participate in garden projects while developing creative and entrepreneurial skills that can support sustainable livelihoods.
During the visit, Dylan Mangwiro, the hub leader, explained how the Uncommon project works and how it empowers young people to develop practical solutions to community challenges.
“At Uncommon, we give young people the space to explore ideas, learn digital and creative skills, and work on projects that solve real problems in their communities,” Mangwiro said. “Innovation is not only about technology; it is about helping young people see opportunities around them and giving them the confidence to create solutions.”

Roche said he was deeply inspired by the hub’s approach to youth empowerment and community development. “What is happening here is remarkable.” he said. “You can see how creativity, technology, and mentorship are unlocking the potential of young people.”
He added that introducing a similar initiative planned for Sizinda Green Gardens could transform the market garden into a learning and innovation space.
“If we can combine agriculture with innovation and youth energy, we can create opportunities that, not only improve food production, but also inspire young people to see agriculture as a modern and exciting pathway for the future.”
