Makokoba Gardeners Learn from Sizinda Green Gardens' Success

A spirit of collaboration and shared learning brought together community gardeners from Makokoba and Sizinda in a bid to strengthen agricultural production and organisational growth.

The exchange visit provided a valuable opportunity for participants to gain insights from proven practices while building networks that can support the long-term success of their gardening initiatives.

Members of the Makokoba community gardens recently conducted a learning visit to Sizinda Green Gardens to exchange knowledge and strengthen their capacity in community-based agriculture and organisational management.

The visit brought together committee members and gardeners from both projects, providing a platform to share experiences and best practices on governance structures, leadership, accountability, and strategies for ensuring the long-term sustainability of community gardens. Participants engaged in discussions on how effective management systems can improve productivity and enhance the overall impact of gardening initiatives.

"This has been a truly valuable experience for our gardeners from Makokoba to learn from an organised and well-led garden, and I hope they can go back home and replicate this good management," commented Councillor Thandi Moyo.

The learning exchange also focused on practical agricultural skills, with Sizinda Green Gardens showcasing its approaches to vegetable production and poultry management.

Visitors toured the garden facilities and received insights on crop selection, irrigation practices, pest management, and techniques for maximising yields in limited spaces.

Discussions on poultry production highlighted the importance of proper housing, feeding, disease management, and record keeping. Participants described the visit as highly informative and valuable, expressing confidence that the lessons learned would help strengthen agricultural production and governance within the Makokoba gardens.
