Renovated classroom blocks handed over to Bulawayo primary school




BULAWAYO
– Barham Green Primary, a deprived school in the low to middle income suburb from which it gets its name, was recently the staging point for the rounding off of the Bulawayo South Constituency Development Fund (CDF) initiative.

The event marked the successful completion of the current CDF programme in the neighbourhood that comprises residential areas covered by Wards 6 and 21. It certainly signified an excellent example of how leaders from different political parties can work as a coordinated unit to achieve good for the local community. Leaders involved in the programme’s success were, Eddie Cross, Member of Parliament for Bulawayo South, Senator Matson Hlalo, Bulawayo South, Cllr. R. Bent, Ward 6, Cllr. R. Matengu, Ward 21 and Mr. G Naidoo, Chairman of the Ward 6 C. A. T.

The programme, conducted in an attitude of complete transparency, entailed the purchase of sports equipment for Indlovu and Sizinda Youth Centres in Ward 21, teachers’ desks and chairs for Maphisa Primary School, Ward 21, classroom furniture for Founders High School, Ward 6 and the renovation of six entire classroom blocks at Barham Green Primary.

Driver of this particular CDF initiative, Hon. Eddie Cross regretted the sad manner in which standards of education in Zimbabwe had deteriorated in the past decade, due to national mismanagement. He however went on to praise the Ministry of Education for the sterling efforts it was making to restore the sector, in spite of the very trying circumstances with which it had to contend. “The primary goal to strive for is to ensure that standards in the education system are restored to their former quality,” encouraged Mr. Cross, in acknowledgement of these efforts.

Present among esteemed guests were Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Hon. Eric Matinenga, senior officials from the Provincial Department of Education, The Ministry of Construction, parents and members of the public, as well as children from the school (who put on performances comprising drama and poetry).

Proceedings were concluded with the hand over ceremony of renovated classroom blocks, in which Minister Matinenga officiated.

The Constituency Development Fund is a government initiated programme in which every month, each of the Nation’s Members of Parliament receive USD$50 000.00, to be utilised in development projects intended to benefit local communities in their constituencies.
