Report back on Bulawayo Council Meeting held 6 October

BULAWAYO – With the exception of the late Cllr. Solomon Ncube, who passed away, late September, 2010, almost every other Councillor from the City’s 29 wards, attended a full Council Meeting, 6 October, 2010, in Chambers.

This Correspondent was present as an observer at the meeting, the intention being, to conduct an assessment in order to determine the effectiveness of various training initiatives the Trust had conducted with Councillors.

Interesting points gleaned at the gathering were:

  • Councillors conducted themselves with a high level of professionalism.

  • Displayed an impressive knowledge of subjects being discussed

  • Respected the views of speakers.

  • Participated with enthusiasm.

  • Showed dedication toward seeking genuine solutions for the plights of residents.

  • Demonstrated a firm resolution to involve residents in decision making with a view to giving them a sense of ownership over their environment and all that this entails.

On the down side, it appears that some Councillors need to pay better attention to time keeping.

The overall impression however, is that training imparted to these community leaders by ZDDT, is indeed bearing fruit. This is evident by the obvious commitment to the welfare of their neighbourhoods as displayed during debate in the Chamber.

Another noticeable aspect was Councillors’ adherence to protocol.
