Sikhanyisiwe Ndebele giving her testimony on how the market garden has improved the quality of her life

In a community where opportunity is often hard-earned, one woman’s quiet determination is rewriting what is possible; revealing how resilience, when nurtured in the right environment, can grow into something far greater than expected.

At Sizinda Green Gardens, the story of Sikhanyisiwe Ndebele stands as a powerful testament to perseverance and transformation. A single mother of three, Sikhanyisiwe joined the market garden in search of a way to provide for her family. What she found went far beyond income; it was a supportive network rooted in solidarity, shared effort, and encouragement. Through consistent participation, she began generating income that steadily improved her household’s stability and wellbeing.

Over time, the garden became a dependable source of livelihood, enabling her to invest in her children’s education, an achievement she holds close to her heart.

Mike Roche, co-founder of Sally Foundation, and Simon Spooner, ZDDT National coordinator, look on.

One of her sons has since graduated from Midlands State University, while another is currently studying at a Polytechnic college.

“This garden changed my life. It gave me a way to stand on my own and provide for my children,” she said.

Reflecting on her journey, she added, “I never imagined that working in a garden would take my children this far, but it has opened doors for them.”

Her story powerfully illustrates how community gardens can cultivate, not only crops, but dignity, opportunity, and lasting generational impact.
