Following several years of unrelenting pressure on the Bulawayo City Council authorities to rehabilitate the potholed streets and roads in his constituency, Councillor Silas Chigora has decided to do lead by example making use of his personal vehicle and shovels.

Several motorists, who were interviewed by ZDDT News, said the re-surfacing of these roads is long overdue and were supposed to be done more than 20 years ago, a predicament that has been frustrating motorists and residents for a long time.

The potholes, which have become an eyesore in the city of Bulawayo and in Ward 4, in particular, have even caused damages to vehicles.

In an interview with Councillor Chigora during the exercise, he told ZDDT News that he has long requested the council authorities to repair the streets but without great success.

“I have requested the relevant council department to rehabilitate these streets, but I have realised that it has taken too long, and the community will think that I am not doing my job.

I have also communicated this predicament to my constituency, and found it better to take the situation head on,” he said.

The Councillor, who had filled a good number of potholes by midday, was also working on a cleaning exercise with his Community Action Team (CAT) picking up litter from around the ward to ensure that a clean and healthy environment prevails.

“I am also trying to improve by achieving a litter free Ward 4 to set the pace for other wards, so that they can learn from our area. I will be glad to see our council performing their duties as this will then spiritually encourage the ratepayers to pay off their arrears,” said Councillor Chigora.
