Community Gardens to Supply PicknPay

PicknPay (PnP), Zimbabwe's largest supermarket chain, has approved the Zimbabwe Development Democracy Trust (ZDDT) supported garden, Green Field Garden, to supply their Bradfield retail outlet in Bulawayo.

In a chat with this reporter, ZDDT horticulture consultant, Yvonne Berkhout, said the deal is that the garden continuously supplies PnP with carrots and peas or beans all year round at the required minimum standard set by the country’s largest retailer.

“The gardeners will be responsible for packaging, branding and delivery to PnP. This is a step up to being self-sufficient. Under normal terms and conditions, PnP usually requires that we service all their branches in Bulawayo therefore they have been kind in allowing us to just focus on one store for the time being,” she said.

One of ZDDT's principle goals is to see communities become innovative with their entrepreneurship and sustain themselves through various self-help projects.
