The Three R's in Environmental Management: ZDDT Gweru manages waste wisley

The Gweru Team has been promoting ZDDT self-help initiatives such as constructing chairs from old tyres and garden tools from used two-litre bottles. The Team is also exploring other ways of economically empowering itself through these zero budget waste management programmes.

“What has motivated us to embark on these projects are the three R’s in environment management. These are re-use, recycle and reduce. We are trying to reduce waste by re-using what has been thrown away. We are not only making chairs, we are also making baskets using bottle lids and making lampshades using can lids. We are trying to diversify so that even the old can have something to do and sell for a few dollars to
earn a living out of it,” said Denny Munetsi, the ZDDT Community Liaison Officer for Midlands South. (Find out about Denny and his outstanding achivement's).

ZDDT emphasises the improvement of human lives through the practice of healthy habits, self-help projects that result in economic empowerment and proper environmental management by the communities.

The Trust has put into place measures of ensuring the achievement of these goals by introducing a number of interventions such as community gardens, clean-up campaigns and most recently, these waste management innovations.
