Gweru celebrates urban greening

Dubbed, Enhancing the Capacity of Local Authorities for Service Delivery, the programme runs in the cities of Bulawayo and Gweru as a pilot scheme. It involves training, environmental clean-ups, tree planting and their after-care, as well as establishing nutritional gardens intended to benefit local communities. GIZ a German international relief organisation in cooperation with its Government are the programme’s funders.

Attended by fifteen residents from ward seven which falls under Cllr. A.  Matyorauta, the event was graced by prominent personalities who included the Officer Commanding Mtapa Police Station, Inspector Walter Makwalo and the deputy head of Mambo high school, Mr. Harris Magusha.  The councillor was not present due to a prior engagement, but was well represented by members of his CAT.

High point of the occasion was a drama presentation by Gweru performing artistes aptly named, Victory Celebration Drama Group, who plugged the theme, “Plant a tree to save Zimbabwe.”

Proceedings closed with a well deserved lunch consisting of isitshwala, (a thick maize porridge), and beef stew, washed down with a local non-alcoholic drink known as mahewu.
