Bulawayo nutritional garden thrives

Bulawayo, Zimbabwe – During a recent courtesy call to Cllr. Thembile Khoza at her Njube office, Ward 12, Team ZDDT took the opportunity to assess progress of a nutritional garden that it helped establish in the neighbourhood.
The thriving garden was, at the time of the visit, tended by just one resident, since others had joined a clean-up campaign conducted in another area of the Ward.
The Team discovered that this particular project, like others of a similar nature in other Wards, faced daunting challenges, greatest of these being lack of appropriate irrigation equipment. Crops in the garden are watered by residents using buckets, filled at a hand operated water pump situated in the vicinity near the project.
Alluding to this particular difficulty, sole care-taker, at the time, Mr. Dube said; “This project would be much more prosperous if we could utilise better irrigation technology. Presently we manually haul water for plants and this hinders our efforts.”
Established to assist in warding off hunger among less privileged residents, the garden, fenced by a well-wisher, experiences no loss by theft. This is due to the fact that local residents were involved at every stage in its development and having nurtured a sense of ownership over the project; ensure its protection day and night.
The project was part of a recently completed greening programme initiated by ZDDT and funded by development partner GIZ, with assistance from the German Government.
