Sebenzela programme rolling on
It may be safely said that the Programme, designed to restore local communities through the concept of self-help and residents taking ownership of their circumstances, is pretty well self-sustained, two years since inception.
The clean-ups which involved removal of litter and illegal refuse dump sites initially proved a challenge as the City Council could not release equipment necessary to expedite the exercises.
However, through intervention by Cllr. Ndlovu, the use of a front-end loader and some lorries was eventually secured and the cleaning activities proceeded.
The City of Bulawayo, as a means to complement the local voluntary workers, also availed ten litter pickers and twenty community based planners from among its work-force. Speaking about the three day long exercise, Mrs. Hingani Mnkhandla said;
“The most impressive thing about these clean-ups is that people are ready to participate, in spite of the fact that they will be working for no financial or material reward. They are simply eager to ensure that the environment is kept clean and in a way, I put this down to the
culture of taking charge over their situations as they have learnt through working with ZDDT.”
