The power of the volunteer in boosting Bulawayo's communities
ZDDT News Correspondent, Ntando Sibanda, managed to catch up with Donald Nyoni who was busy with storm drain digging.
The Community Action Team member of Ward 15 (Luveve: which falls under Cllr I Mabaleka), says that he saw a need to restore the community and felt the urge to stand up and fill the gap that many had shunned.
"As a resident of Luveve, I realised that there are portions of this ward which are no longer clean. Having made that realisation, I decided to volunteer to be part of the CAT so that I could be actively involved its restoration. I also saw that a lot of people just do not want to partake in voluntary work because they think it’s for the underprivileged. This made my heart sore hence I decided to volunteer so that I could also show them that there are no boundaries or classes in as far as community restoration is concerned. After I started doing this voluntary work, I realised that a lot of people have started following suit,” said Mr Nyoni.
Mr Nyoni also said he was inspired by the training workshops that are being conducted by ZDDT. The workshops have enlightened the populace of Bulawayo about the importance of voluntary work in the restoration of the “City of Kings” to its former glory as the Cleanest City in Africa.
"These workshops are very helpful in educating the residents. These workshops put emphasis on a clean environment for a healthy and therefore productive way of living. I really commend ZDDT for conducting these workshops as I have learnt a lot from them," he said in conclusion.
