Cleaning Bulawayo: High school kids get serious about keeping their city clean

In an interview with ZDDT’s Field Correspondent, Ntando Sibanda (NS), the school’s Health Club Director, Mr Christopher Kadawaka (CK), said the school has realised that the children are key in spreading the message of sound hygiene and cleanliness; hence the decision to let the pupils lead the initiative.

NS: What is the reason behind this cleanup campaign and what are the projected results?

CK: We saw that the community is dirty and the main aim is to educate people that dumping litter is not good. We are challenging them, by saying let us keep our environment clean and the best way to educate people is by setting examples.

NS: Why have you chosen school children to help you in educating the community about cleanliness?

CK: By using school children, we can spread the message easier and faster, as they will take the message home and deep into the communities. We are also saying that, if they get used to this, it will develop into a culture for them and they will educate and inspire other people to follow suit.

NS
: also caught up with Entumbane High School Head girl, Emma Mugadza (EM), who commended the Councillor led initiative saying that, “when you teach a child, you teach the whole nation”.

NS
: What has motivated you and the other pupils here to participate in this important activity?

EM: I believe that if we are clean then we will value our environment and keep it clean. Our aim is to clean these public areas so that we can show the residents that a clean environment is attainable. I am glad that the community is responding positively to our message.

The school Health Club sought the permission of the Local Authority, through the avenue of the Councillor, who also invited ZDDT to witness this ground breaking event in environmental responsibility in Ward 10.

The invitation extended to the Trust is a clear indication that it is now regarded as a key stakeholder in Environmental Health and also exhibits the impact of ZDDT facilitated training, as its shows that the local leaders have grasped the importance of community participation and ownership in keeping their city clean.
