30 years later and tennis courts are open again thanks to ZDDT
The 17th of July 2010 saw the re-opening of the Barbourfields Tennis Court which had not been operating for the past 30 years.
The councillor for Ward 8 Mr M.J. Sibanda invited the local MP who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, Honourable T. Khupe, local Senator M. Hlalo, Mayor of Bulawayo, Mr P.P. Moyo, several departments of the City Council and local leaders.
These were supportive of the project as they gave encouraging speeches and some donated rackets and tennis balls.
It was a dream come true for local residents, thanks to the ZDDT (Zimbabwe Development Democracy Trust) who came to the rescue by providing not only the technical support and equipment but also financed the project, which had been identified by the councillor and locals.
ZDDT through their able representative Mr B. Mtengwa came up with a group of local community volunteers known as CAT (Community Action Team) which saw the day to day operations of the project.
The facility will provide entertainment for the residents and early detection of talent amongst youths thereby developing it to professional levels locally, regionally and internationally.
The youngsters would grow up to be disciplined and responsible citizens who would put time to good and profitable use than engaging in criminal activities. All involved should be commended for a job well done.
