Annah Nxumalo, 69, a senior citizen who lives in Ward 6's Sidojiwe hostel, was overjoyed to receive $50 from the Zimbabwe Development and Democracy Trust's (ZDDT) Business Social Credit Scheme (BSCS).

The Sally Foundation of Australia and Bulawayo-based companies have contributed to the BSCS scheme, which aims to protect needy families in the city from financial hardship.

"I began staying at the hostel in 1965. My biggest challenge right now is paying my rent. I don't work; I only make a living by selling tomatoes and vegetables, which don't pay well. I take care of my two grandchildren and I must pay ZWL$1000 in rentals and food," Nxumalo explained.

Manyika Chiyanongwa, the Chairman of Sidojiwe Hostel, said he occasionally contributes to the senior citizens' electricity bills.

"I moved here in 2005 after being affected by the Murambatsvina operation in Mzilikazi. "I occasionally assist Gogo Nxumalo when she is in need of food or contribute to her utility bills," he explained.

"I would like to thank the ZDDT for always cooperating with us. We really appreciate them taking care of the struggling senior citizens, and we hope they can continue to support our communities," said Tawanda Ruzive, Ward 6 Councillor.
