BULAWAYO – Ward Three Chairman Mr. Patrick Mlauzi is a remarkable man who has achieved a feat that represents a commendable model of excellence in executing the principles of a greening initiative that was recently conducted in the city by ZDDT.
Mr. Mlauzi’s accomplishment involved the drawing of an accurate map, illustrating the exact position of every one of the 100 trees that were recently planted at a common area in the middle income suburb of Mahatshula, eight kilometres along the Harare Road. Even more incredible is the fact that he has listed each one of the trees by its scientific and Ndebele names!
Asked how he had managed this, Mr. Mlauzi smiled and said; “It’s not as complicated as it might appear. You see, I trained in technical drawing, hence the apparent attention to detail, as you put it.” Mr. Mlauzi described the exercise of mapping and recording of his trees, as a “pretty straight forward task.” He said that all he did was go from sapling to sapling as soon as they were planted and recorded their names from the wooden tag provided with each tree, adding that he then simply matched the names to the appropriate positions on his map.
During a recently completed ZDDT greening initiative, every one of Bulawayo’s 29 and Gweru’s 18 Wards were allocated 100 indigenous trees for planting in existing or new parks. Residents led by their respective Councillor and his or her C.A.T then voluntarily conducted the requisite work. The Programme received financial support from development agency GIZ working with the German Government.
