The scene presented an excellent opportunity for a story, so correspondent, armed with camera and note book duly disembarked and went about investigating the proceedings.

Leader of the group (composed mainly of middle aged men and women), Mr. Joseph Ngwenya, explained that work being done entailed a City Council initiative meant to benefit local communities.

He said that in the scheme, Councillors and their Community action Teams, selected needy persons among residents, who would then be contracted by the City Council, in order to conduct the required work.

This work is not necessarily confined to clearing road verges but included drain clearing and removal of tall grass and bushes from common areas.

Money accruing from such activities, contributes towards enabling participants to care for their families and themselves.

The remarkable feature about his particular scheme is the fact that it ties in so well with the Trust’s initiatives, which include training of community leaders to urge residents into developing an interest in restorative work and taking ownership over their environs and amenities.

Of note too, was the sight of clean-up members wearing the protective gloves and wielding tools donated by ZDDT, to their Councillor, T. Khosa.
