Mr Makalinga, chairman of Hlanganani Garden

In a remarkable turn of events, the Hlanganani community market garden’s investment in grafted fruit trees has begun to bear fruit—literally!

Just a year and a half after planting, the trees have produced their first harvest, surprising even the most optimistic members of the community.

Garden chairman, Mr Makalinga, expressed both joy and astonishment at the rapid progress. "We are thrilled to see fruit on these trees so soon. What’s even more surprising is the size of the trees, they are still quite small, yet they are already bearing fruit. This is beyond what we expected, and we are eagerly looking forward to our first small harvest."

Grafted fruit trees, known for their faster growth and higher yields compared to traditional varieties, were introduced as part of a broader initiative to improve food security, nutrition and income generation in the garden.

The early success has sparked hope and excitement among the beneficiaries, who see the potential for long-term benefits.
